An adaptation of the stage musical which was itself an adaptation of the 1988 John Waters film. Overweight high school student Tracy Turnblad dreams of dancing on a local TV show, but she has competition in the form of Amber - the prettiest girl in school. This is unabashed, uplifting kitsch; a goofy tribute to the sixties with John Travolta stepping into Divine's drag shoes as Tracy's mum, Christopher Walken as her dancing dad, Michelle Pfeiffer as Amber's manipulative mother, and Queen Latifah as Motormouth Maybelle.
