Way back when, with the advent of home video in New Zealand, Alice had a notion: why not create a film library with not only all the greatest movies ever made, but also the very best in world cinema? A sort of rainbow's end for discerning movie lovers...
Alice in Videoland originally opened in Hereford Street on the 25th of May 1985 and has evolved into an immense, rich and eclectic collection of the 7th Art. Housing Godzone's motherlode of arthouse, foreign, cult, classic, documentary and hard-to-find titles on VHS and DVD, Alice can truly boast to have created a cinephile's Pot o' Gold.
Every title in the library is hand-picked by Alice's movie mavens, often requiring rigorous research of film archives, consultation with the planet's foremost movie critics and valuable recommendations from our members. We search the world for artistically important films, bypassing much cinematic mediocrity and questionable mainstream releases to focus on the good, the great, the rare and the unusual, resulting in a collection like no other.
Add to the above mix - the internet. Alice in 'Cyberland', is an encyclopedic facility and a gargantuan labyrinth of intrigue created by the magicians at matrx and the cast and crew at Alice in Videoland. This exciting resource enables members to not only search for films by Title, Director or Actor with Alice's unique Film Selector, but also use the Browse The Aisles and Through The Looking Glass features that make exploring the cinematic universe an informative, interesting and enlightening experience. Another unique function of Alice's website enables members to reserve DVDs 'LIVE' for Instore Pickup DVD Home delivery or Courier Home Delivery. That is to say, as films move to and from the permanent collection, you can see exactly when they are available for reservation, whether it be right now or the day they're being returned.
With Alice's massive title inventory and depth of resource, we hope membership will be your passport to an incredible world of filmic entertainment and information to be continually rediscovered and cherished.
