Born in Maryland in 1947, Thomas Leo Clancy Jr is best-known for his technically-detailed political thrillers and espionage novels, generally set in and around The Cold War. A political conservative, he has donated thousands of dollars to the US Republican party, though he was a surprising supporter of Islam after the September 11 attacks. Many of his books have been translated to film with his ubiquitous Jack Ryan character being played by Harrison Ford twice in 'Clear and Present Danger' and 'Patriot Games', by Alec Baldwin in 'Hunt for Red October', and Ben Affleck in 'The Sum of All Fears'. "I've made up stuff that's turned out to be real, that's the spooky part." - Tom Clancy
