Moving drama from director Chen Kaige ("Farewell My Concubine") centers on a 13-year-old violin prodigy whose father takes him from their small provincial town to Beijing for professional lessons. Initially studying under a reclusive instructor, the young virtuoso eventually becomes the pupil of an acclaimed music professor (Kaige) and an unlikely friend to an eccentric older woman. Featuring the music of Bruch, Richard Strauss, Liszt, Massenet and a climactic performance of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D. With Liu Peiqi, Chen Hong, Wang Zhiwen, Tang Yun and Chen Kaige.
