The Hardacres and the Fairchilds live in the same mill town in Northern England. That however is where the similarity ends. Bradley Hardacre (Timothy West) has "loads of brass" and owns the coal mine, cotton mill and most of the town. George Fairchild (Geoffrey Hinsliff) is his downtrodden but loyal employee. The lives of the Hardacres and the Fairchilds are inevitably intertwined with romance and contempt, resulting in some of the most hilarious moments in British comedy.
