Exorcist: The Beginning

Renny Harlin directs this controversial prequel chronicling Father Merrin's (Stellan Skarsgard) first encounter with the demon Pazuzu. Questioning his faith after witnessing the horrors endured by the members of his parish during World War II, Merrin travels to East Africa to help excavate a mysteriously buried Byzantine Christian church from the 5th century. But the dig leads to horrific results, bringing him face to face with the ultimate evil. Trivia note: Director Paul Schrader had already filmed the prequel, more along the lines of a psychological drama, when the studio changed it's mind regarding content and commissioned a new production with a different script and director. Schrader's version exists in completed form and the studio proposes to release it at some future point.
