At the start of World War II, the race was already on between the Nazis and the Allies to be the first to create an atomic weapon. By teaming up with the Japanese, Hitler planned to launch an atomic attack on San Franciso. The date was set for August 17th, 1945. But on August 6th an American Superfortress dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, and the war was finished. The race to nuclear war was won by the Allies - but only by a matter of days.
