Chokher Bali

Bengali filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh adapted and directed this costume melodrama based on the classic 1902 novel by Rabindranath Tagore. Subtly using the domestic situation of a Calcutta household as a metaphor for British rule, Ghosh has woven a luscious tale of deception and manipulation. With an outstanding performance from Hindi superstar Aishwarya Rai (here dubbed into Bengali) 'Chokher Bali' was chosen for Official Selection at the Cannes, Toronto, Chicago and London Film Festivals.
