In 1949 and 1950, Renoir travelled to Bengal for his first colour film - the story of a large British family living on the banks of the Ganges. Winning 1952s BAFTA for Best Foreign Film, it remains one of Renoir's loveliest, drollest and most pleasing films. Features outstanding cinematography by Jean's brother Claude, and launched the career of Satyajit Ray, assistant director on the production. Based on Rumer Godden's novel.
