The Red Tent

A virtually unknown but first-rate film by Soviet filmmaker Mikhail Kalatozov. This ripping adventure epic was funded in Italy and based on an actual event. Peter Finch plays General Umberto Nobile, commander of a dirigible that crashes during an Arctic flight in 1928, and Sean Connery is Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who leads a desperate rescue mission. Also stars Hardy Kruger, Claudia Cardinale.
