Gohatto

Master filmmaker Nagisa Oshima (In the Realm of the Senses) returns to the screen with this fascinatingly ambiguous tale of homoerotic desire and jealousy in a regiment of macho samurai warriors. Set in 1865 feudal Japan, the shogunate militia needs recruits, and Captain Hijikata (Kitano) accepts two young applicants, the brash and lowbred Tashiro and the delicate and deadly Kano (Ryuhei). Kano's who's masterful sword skills are outshined by his androgynous beauty, immediately intrigues his fellow students, superiors and even his captain, quickly stirring jealously and competition. Featuring an atmospheric score by Academy Award-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto.
