The Getting of Wisdom

Based on the novel by Henry Handel Richardson (in fact a pseudonym for a 19th century female author), Bruce Beresford's coming of age drama perfectly captures the suffocating repression of Victorian values through the eyes of a young girl used to roaming free in the Australian outback. Includes great performances from Barry Humphries and John Waters (not to be confused with the quirky American director of the same name!).
