River Queen

Set during the New Zealand land wars of the 1850s, Vincent Ward's embattled film focuses on Sarah (Samantha Morton), the daughter of an Irish settler, who has an illegitimate child with a tribal leader. When the child is kidnapped by his paternal grandfather six years later, Sarah resolves to find him. Written and directed by Ward, the controversy surrounding the film, (including Ward's dismissal and eventual return, and Morton's extended illness) seem to have damaged the film's emotional heart, despite its beauty. Also stars Cliff Curtis, Kiefer Sutherland and Temuera Morrison.
