War and Peace (BBC)
Based on Tolstoy's epic story set during the Napoleonic Wars, this BBC series is a gripping and faithful adaptation, with Anthony Hopkins as the self-conscious Pierre and Morag Hood as the free-spirited Natasha. At the time of filming it was the BBC's most expensive drama to date, and the sweeping vistas, careful writing and excellent performances (Hopkins won a BAFTA for his role), testify to money well-spent.
