And the Pursuit of Happiness

For a period of about three months in 1986, celebrated French director Louis Malle grabbed his camera and took a tour of immigrant communities and refugees across the United States. The results are peppered liberally with insight and good humour as Malle meets everyone from 'illegal' Mexicans to Cubans in Miami, from Africans and West Indians to Russian Jews, each bringing their own unique interpretation of the American Dream and ending, appropriately, at the Statue of Liberty.
