Millennium Mambo

The first part of a planned series about life in modern Taipei, this intellectually challenging film begins with bar hostess Vicky (Shu Qi) imagining how she will break up with her pathologically jealous, speed-sniffing DJ boyfriend. Drenched in neon colours and pounding techno this tour de force plays fast and loose with time and narrative while managing to keep the emotional heart of the story in tact. Among many international awards it won both the Golden Palm and the Technical Grand Prize at Cannes 2001.
