An early must-see example of Italian neo-realist cinema from Vittorio De Sica, ranking with such other classics as his 'Bicycle Thieves' (1948), 'Umberto D.' (1952) and Roberto Rossellini's 'Rome, Open City' (1945). Using non-professional actors, De Sica and co-writer Cesare Zavattini, also a leading figure of neo-realism, paint an uncompromising and tragic picture of the lives of Italian street children abandoned by their parents in the wake of the Second World War, a war that decimated De Sica's homeland.
