Herman Melville's classic sea story receives a superb treatment with Peter Ustinov behind the lens. In his first film, Terence Stamp is Billy Budd, an optimistic young sailor, serving the British Navy in 1797, during the battle between England and France. Budd wins favour with all in his crew except for the nasty master-at-arms, who claims Budd is plotting a mutiny. The accusation leads to a trial in which Billy must fight for his life. Ustinov also stars, along with Robert Ryan and Melvyn Douglas.
