The Lodger / Downhill

Aesthetically influenced by German Expressionism, and based on the story of Jack the Ripper, 'The Lodger' was the film in which Hitchcock first demonstrated his flair for suspense. A serial killer known as The Avenger is terrorising London, murdering young women with alarming regularity. At the same time, a new lodger, Jonathan Drew, arrives at the Bloomsbury home of Mr and Mrs Bounting. Although Mr Drew has rather odd habits, the Bountings' pretty blonde daughter Daisy finds him intriguing. As Daisy flirts, her police officer fiance, Joe, jealously begins to suspect the newcomer might be The Avenger. This silent era thriller also marks the beginning of Hitchcock's trademark cameo appearances.
