Set in the alternate-universe fictional location of Atlantic-Cite, with comic book-bright colours and playful sound effects, Jean-Luc Godard pays tribute to American filmmakers Nicholas Ray and Sam Fuller with his take on the American gangster movie. The story revolves around Paula Nelson (Anna Karina) and her search for revenge against those who killed her husband, Richard Politzer (voiced by Godard himself). Based on the novel by Richard Stark and co-starring Laszlo Szabo and Marianne Faithfull.
