James Wilby and Juliet Aubrey star in the intimate portrayal of the endearing love affair between the young Queen Mother Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and Albert, the Duke of York, or as he was affectionately known Bertie. Married in 1923, they are thrust into the limelight in 1936 when Bertie's older brother, Edward VIII, abdicates to marry the twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. Together the reluctant royals rally a nation during the horrors of wartime. Also stars Alan Bates, Eileen Atkins and Charles Edwards.
