The Bridge of San Luis Rey
Adapted from Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer-winning novel, and set in Peru in 1714 when the collapse of a rickety bridge kills five people. Brother Juniper (Gabriel Byrne) is a Franciscan monk, assigned to investigate the tragedy by his archbishop (Robert De Niro). It is his belief that God chose these five people for a reason, and after many years' investigation he delivers his findings. Impressive cast also includes Harvey Keitel, Kathy Bates, F. Murray Abraham and Geraldine Chaplin in this philosophical period piece that was largely panned by critics.
