Goodbye, Mr Chips

Spanning over 50 years, this TV adaptation of James Hilton's novel tells the story of Mr Chipping (Martin Clunes), an earnest young Latin master and his arrival at Brookfield school in 1880. Mr Chipping's life is transformed by the meeting and courtship of his loving wife Kathie (Victoria Hamilton) who gives him the nickname of 'Mr Chips'. Looking back over his teaching career, we see Mr Chips slowly transform, through the love and influence of his unconventional wife, from an idealistic teacher in his twenties to a wiser, gentler headmaster in his eighties, and an icon to the schoolboys of Brookfield school.
