A Beirut beauty salon serves as a microcosm of modern society in director Nadine Labaki's look at liberated conversation in a conflicted society, as five very different women come together to confide in one another. Labaki also co-wrote and stars as Layale, a beautician torn by her secret affair with a married man; her co-worker Nisrine is engaged to be married, but has hidden her modern looks from her husband's family; shampooist Rima lusts after a female customer and her lush locks; aging actress Jamal makes frequent visits to measure up to her much younger competition; while Rose seems to have given up the fight against her advancing years, though the appearance of a new suitor may change things. A delicately deicious film that resists being overly sweet.
