New Zealand Disasters: Tangiwai and Wahine

Contains two programmes: 'The Truth About the Tangiwai Disaster' and 'Wahine - the Untold Story'. In NZ, the main trunk railway line and two state highways cross the foothills of three active volcanoes. On Christmas Eve 1953 a passenger train was derailed when one of these volcanoes burst its banks and sent lahars onto the tracks, killing hundreds. April 10 1968 saw the worst passenger boat accident in the country's history as the Wahine sank and (despite being within Wellington harbour) 51 lives were lost.
