A stylishly dank and eerie noir about an unhappily married man whose brief dalliance with a stranger leaves him with no alibi when his wife is found murdered. Arrested for the crime, he is soon wondering if the woman he met was a figment of his imagination, but his unflinching secretary believes in his innocence, and she's prepared to go to great lengths to prove it. A faithful adaptation of Cornell Woolrich's book, brought to the screen with seedy panache by German-born director Robert Siodmak ('The Killers' (1946)).
