Tricks

Six-year-old Stefek spends most of his time trailing his 18-year-old sister Elka and her mechanic boyfriend. His father left when he was just little, and observing his sister's pseudo-magical attempts to hold on to her man, Stefek decides to use similar methods to bring his father back - or at least someone who looks a bit like him. With its pitch-perfect, serio-comic depiction of working-class life in the provinces, Poland's official submission for the 2009 Academy Awards scooped plenty of international film festival awards; engaging performances, dry humour and a kooky bag of fate-tempting tricks making it a real crowd-pleaser.
