In March 1997, not even a year since the slaying of Tupac Shakur, fellow rapper Christopher 'Biggie Smalls' Wallace was gunned down on his way home from a party in L.A. - the respective kings of West and East Coast gangster rap were dead; both murdered in an eerie reflection of the violence that pervaded their lyrics. This bio-pic begins long before that, when Biggie was a precocious chubby kid in Brooklyn, teased by his peers, and eager to get ahead. Angela Bassett plays Biggies' mother, and Derek Luke is Sean 'Puffy' Combs who helped the big man turn his life around, and attain his big dream.
