The Map Reader

In a small New Zealand town, 16-year-old Michael leads a lonely, introverted existence with his single mum, Amelia (Rebecca Gibney), whose guilt and alcoholism threaten to drive her cherished son away. Uncomfortable with typical adolescent exploits, he finds escape through a passionate love of maps. Then into his life come two young women - Mary, blind since birth, though keenly aware of her effect on the neighbourhood boys; and Alison, a friend from school with unhappy secrets. As his life begins to careen out of control, Michael must decide where he truly wants life to take him. A haunting and unique tale of youth with touches of humour and superb performances from all. Music by Paul Ubana Jones.
