A big city falls prey to a mysterious plague of blindness in Fernando Meirelles' ('City of God'; 'The Constant Gardener') adaptation of Jose Saramago's novel. The first to succumb are put in quarantine, among them eye surgeon Mark Ruffalo whose wife (Julianne Moore), also pretends to be blind so as not to be separated from him. However as the centre fills up, food and resources become scarce, and a new 'might is right' order develops under the increasingly merciless Gabriel Garcia Bernal. Meirelles packs his allegorical thriller with characteristically innovative visuals and an excellent supporting cast that includes Danny Glover, Maury Chakin, Alice Braga and Sandra Oh.
