The Class ( Entre Les Murs )

French director Laurent Cantet does something miraculous with the well-worn conceit of a teacher and his underprivileged students in this fresh and optimistic piece of realist cinema; winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Based on an autobiographical novel by author and former teacher Francois Begaudeau, who also plays himself in the film, the story centres mainly on his attempts to reach Souleymane, a young teen from Mali with family problems and a hefty attitude. All the young cast are non-professional actors, and scenes were worked out using improvisation making for a compelling realism.
