During an archaeological dig in Nazi-occupied Poland, Greek national, Athos finds a frightened 7-year-old boy hiding near the site. He smuggles him home to Greece and vows to protect him, but the young Jakob has witnessed the majority of his family murdered and, most vexing of all, doesn't know what became of his sister. After the war, Jakob and Athos emigrate to Canada, but Jakob is so haunted by his childhood memories he finds it almost impossible to get on with his life. Based on Anne Michael's poetic novel, this is a moving story about the legacy of grief, and learning to let go.
