This gripping BBC series is recognised as the most faithful of all adaptations of H G Wells' psychological thriller. The arrival, in a small 19th century country inn, of a man with his face completely swathed in bandages, immediately arouses intrigue and suspicion. His behaviour does little to endear him to the locals. At first, he is polite and respectful but increasingly he becomes bad-tempered, brusque, reclusive and demanding. It isn't long before gossip and fear surround the stranger at the inn. Could he be a criminal on the run? Is there only darkness through the tear in his trouser leg? What horror lies under the all-encompassing bandages? Meanwhile the mysterious bandaged man, obsessed with his strange experiments, is becoming more frantic, more desperate and ever more dangerous.
