Filmmaker Abraham Polonsky had an interesting life outside of Hollywood, working for the OSS (the CIA's precursor) during WWII and then being turned on by the House of Un-American Activities Committee. He made a triumphant return to directing (after being blacklisted since 1951) with this searing tale, based on true events, of the vicious manhunt for an Indian after an accidental death. Robert Blake is the Native American on the run, Katharine Ross his object of affection and Robert Redford the sheriff reluctant to be leading a group of white vigilantes to their victim.
