Overlord

An under-appreciated masterpiece of filmmaking focusing on 18-year-old Tom, who enters the British Army in 1944. The film follows him through his rigourous basic training and into the shock of battle, as he, along with so many others, storms the beaches at Normandy as part of Operation Overlord. Director Stuart Cooper utilises carefully chosen stock footage from the war for almost half of the film, and seamlessly weaves his narrative within it, shooting with period film stock and lenses. The result is a vividly personal and sombre story told within the context of one of history's most epic moments. A lost gem worth discovering.
