A working-class district in the Paris of 1936 is in upheaval following the closing of the local music hall. Ex-stage hand Pigoil fears he will lose custody of his son if he has no income; electrician Milou is a hot-headed skirtchaser out to change the world in favour of the common man; and Jacky, who once carried the sandwich board advertisements, is convinced he himself can become a vaudeville star, despite no apparent talent. Meanwhile, the Nazi threat looms on the horizon. A sweetly nostalgic homage to French vaudeville from Christophe Barratier ('The Chorus'); the film was nominated for five Cesars including Best Cinematography.
