Stray Dogs

Marziyeh Meshkini's beautifully crafted and moving insight into post-Taliban Afghanistan follows the fortunes of a young brother and sister and the dishevelled dog they rescue from a Kabul street. Visiting that jail where their mother is imprisoned, the itinerant trio is permitted to stay overnight. But the following morning, they are thrown out: prison is for criminals, not homeless orphans. Desperate to return to their mother in jail, brother and sister attempt a series of robberies, but each seems doomed to failure until a fugitive seems to offer an unusual solution: they can learn to steal watching Hollywood films: alternatively. European cinema can teach them how to get caught.
