Tears for Sale

Set in the first half of the 20th century, the story follows the journey of two sisters, Mala Boginja and Ognjenka. The little village where the sisters live is in the aftermath of war, in which boys fought as soon as they could hold a gun. Now there is a shortage of men in the village and Mala Boginja and Ognjenka take it upon themselves to travel to the nearest city, find men, kidnap them and bring them back so the village can continue to prosper. A huge box office success in its homeland, this allegorical Serbian fantasy fable of passionate female determination is a cheerful, postmodern fairytale for adults that has been compared to 'a Grimm's fairytale come to life'.
