Romantic comedy starring Hugh Dancy and Maggie Gyllenhaal, based loosely on the life of Joseph Mortimer Granville, the inventor of a novel device for treating 'female hysteria' - the vibrator. The film is set at the end of the 19th century, when an official medical technique for the treatment of 'female hysteria' included massage of the pelvic area. Dr Robert Dalrymple (Jonathan Pryce) has set up a surprisingly successful practice specialising in the treatment. Dashing young doctor Mortimer Granville (Dancy) joins the firm and proves particularly popular with the women who go there. He also proves popular with Dalrymple's two daughters, Charlotte (Gyllenhaal) and Emily (Felicity Jones), who compete for his affection. But his work is taking its toll on his hands - could there be a better way of inducing 'paroxysmal convulsions'?
