"Autumn Sun" is that joyous, welcome rarity: a modern movie love story that works successfully on the heart and mind rather than the senses or prurient instincts. It's genuinely romantic without being gushy, touching without being sentimental, stirring without being graphic. This film (winner of the Goya Award as 1996's Best Latin American film) is one of the most memorable movie romances in several years. Is it so effective despite the fact that its lovers are both well past 50? Or because of it? Set in Buenos Aires, "Autumn Sun" stars two of Argentina's most distinguished and brilliant film actors: Norma Aleandro of "The Official Story" and Federico Luppi of John Sayles' movie, "Men With Guns." They're a wonderful match-up. The pair they're playing are richly drawn, believable, full of life and humanity: Clara Goldstein, a Jewish accountant in her 50s, and Raoul Ferraro, a 60ish artist and picture frame worker of Italian descent.
