Lady in the Lake

Robert Montgomery stars in and directs this snappy adaptation of Raymond Chandler's hardboiled detective mystery. The case begins when Marlowe, the private eye, sets out to find the missing wife of a publishing magnate. Several smack-arounds, one dead gigolo, a few angry cops, a booze-soaked frame-up and one dame in the lake later& The historical attraction of this film is that it is entirely shot in the first person perspective of Marlowe - in fact we only see Montgomery when he looks himself in the mirror! Early camera experimentation, classic noir plot and a gorgeous Audrey Totter make this a must-see film of the 1940s.
