Teacher Sarah (Olivia Wilde) and NYC cop Phil (Luke Wilson) are parents to young Jessie (Casey Walker). On a road trip, the family makes a pit stop at a gas station, but when Jessie leaves to use the bathroom, hes never seen again. One year later, Sarah is lost in depression, trying to cling to the idea that Jessie is still alive, while Phil visits a support group to manage the loss, befriending Pete (John Leguizamo), another grieving father. While Phil deals with the reality of dead ends when it comes to Jessies case, Sarah starts to give in to her dark thoughts, projecting motherly protection on Adam (Ty Simpkins), an Autistic boy with neglectful parents, Shannon (Elisabeth Moss) and Joe (Kevin Corrigan), while experimentation with drugs and cutting fail to provide the emotional satisfaction shes been craving since she lost her son.
