Animal Crackers

The Marx Brothers' second film finds them still struggling to get a footing in their new medium. With blocking that exposes its stage origins, Animal Crackers finds the farcical foursome crashing a society party being held by Dumont (who else?). Groucho makes his grand entrance as the noted African explorer Jeffrey T. Spaulding ("The 'T' stands for Edgar") while Harpo follows close behind blowing chocolate smoke bubbles. Ultimately, Chico and Harpo get roped into stealing a painting, which leads to one of their classic routines. Despite its flaws, though, the film is at times a riotous skewering of the upper class that will leave one resting assured that in "Alabama the tusks are loosa'."
