The provocative, imaginative true-life story of how the intense and passionate relationship of 1950s Christchurch teenagers Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme led to the grizzly murder of Pauline's mother. Melanie Lynskey and Kate Winslet are outstanding in the leads, the diary readings are completely authentic as are most of the film's locations. The tea-shop where Mrs Parker ate her last meal was knocked down just a few days after Peter Jackson and his crew finished shooting there. It cleaned up at the NZ Film and TV Awards, winning ten gongs, and among many international nods it was nominated for a Best Screenplay Oscar in 1995.
