Amazing Grace

The incredible true story of William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd), who fought for years, along with other anti-slavery campaigners, to ban the trans-Atlantic slave trade in the late 18th century. Michael Apted directs this ode to the power of personal action with a distinguished British cast that includes Albert Finney, Michael Gambon, Rufus Sewell and Romola Garai. The title refers to the famous hymn, written by slave trader John Newton whose slave ship narrowly avoided wrecking in a storm. Newton attributed his salvation to a desperate prayer and became a Christian minister. Many believe he wrote Amazing Grace in reference to his former profession from which he had been saved by God's grace.
