In the near future, the corporations that govern the United States have devised a way for citizens to release negative energy. It's called "the Purge," an annual 12-hour period during which all crimes are deemed legal. When an intruder breaks into James Sandin's (Ethan Hawke) gated community during the yearly lockdown, he begins a sequence of events that threatens to tear a family apart.
