Based on the HG Wells novel, this film about a Martian invasion of the Earth is a superior sci-fi and won an Oscar for its special effects. It was originally broadcast on radio by Orson Welles in 1938, terrifying many listeners who believed the shocking events to be true. The rights were secured in 1925 and Cecil B deMille was set to direct. More than 25 years later, he hired director George Pal (who reputedly wanted to shoot the last third of the film in 3D), after Alfred Hitchcock declined the job.
