Memory and Desire

Niki Caro's haunting tale is based on a story from Peter Wells' 'Dangerous Desires' - originally inspired by a news item about a Japanese woman found living in a cave on a remote New Zealand beach. At its core is the mystery surrounding the death of a young husband, Keiji, on his New Zealand honeymoon. He and his wife, Sayo, marry in New Zealand away from the disapproval of Keiji's intimidating mother. Winner of 4 awards, including Best Film, at the 1999 NZ Film and TV Awards.
