Othello (Welles)

Shot entirely out of sequence over four years because of budget difficulties, this would be one of the most fascinating attempts at Shakespeare ever filmed. The monumental sets, the stark choral and instrumental music are melded by alchemist Orson Welles into an unforgettable film experience. Welles stars in the title role as the hot tempered Moor who is consumed with jealousy when his devious underling Iago leads him to believe that his wife Desdemona is unfaithful. Thought lost to the ravages of time, the film has undergone more than $1 million in restoration work after a long mislaid 35mm master negative was found in a New Jersey warehouse.
