Ken Russell's garish and psychedelic handling of The Who's visionary rock opera about a young man named Tommy (Roger Daltrey), who retreats into a motionless world after witnessing the murder of his father by his mother (Ann-Margaret) and her lover (Oliver Reed). The striking visual compositions and brilliant music (Pete Townshend's landmark lyrics) carry the film. Some excellent performances from non-actors: Tina Turner, Eric Clapton and Elton John. Jack Nicholson contributes a great cameo as a specialist assigned to cure Tommy.
